According to British media, Atletico Madrid are so desperate to keep Courtois on a permanent basis they are ready to send a superstar the other direction.
Thibaut Courtois has developed a fine reputation as one of the future consensus top goalkeepers in European football.
Last season, he returned 20 clean sheets from 37 appearances in La Liga, conceding an average of 0.78 goals per game, making 1.95 saves per game on average, while saving 2.67 shots per goal conceded.
This season, he is recording similar statistics… as he already has eight clean sheets, concedes at an average of 0.65 times per game, completes an average of 1.47 saves per game, while making 2.5 saves per goal conceded.
This would matter to Chelsea if they did not have Petr Cech between their own sticks. Courtois is reaching a level where he will demand regular first-team football wherever he goes having received just that at Atletico Madrid for the past two and a half seasons.
And, according to recent reports in both the People and in The Mirror, Atleti are so desperate to keep him in their squad that they will allegedly offer an extraordinary player-swap deal to Chelsea, with tantalising goal-scorer Diego Costa, 19 goals from 17 La Liga appearances this season, heading the other direction.
If there is no cash involved, if this is a pure swap between the clubs of one player for another, for a goalkeeper who has not once represented Chelsea… surely this could go down as one of the greatest January transfers of all time?
