€40m Manchester United target speaks of 'resentment'

Lucas Moura

Lucas Moura, linked with Manchester United, has revealed a possible reason behind his difficult season to date with PSG.

Lucas Moura is a player facing a crucial first half of 2014.

He has gone from being Brazil's golden boy, to a player who did not even make the squad for their recent international games.

His struggles to establish himself as a 'must-pick' this season for PSG are behind that, and have seen rumours regarding his future circulating.

A player Sir Alex Ferguson tried desperately to sign for Manchester United before PSG blew them out of the water with a €40m mega-bid, Lucas has been speaking about his season to the press.

He has revealed that an unhappy state of mind could in fact be behind his form, angry at goings on behind the scenes at the club.

A key figure in tempting him to PSG was Brazilian hero Leonardo, sporting director at the French giants.

He was given a 13 month ban for pushing a referee in July, and he later resigned from his post at the Ligue 1 champions.

Lucas Moura told South American news outlet Terra: "Struggling to adapt in France? In a way, yes. At first it went well, but then, many injuries are occurred. Afterwards, there was the departure of Leonardo, the former sporting director of PSG. I resented this period."

A change in management, with Carlo Ancelotti leaving to be replaced by Laurent Blanc, meant more upheaval for the 21-year-old to acclimatise to.

This season he has made 12 starts and 11 appearances from the bench, managing three goals and five assists.

Rumours in Brazil even linked Manchester United with returning for him, while the Italian press claimed Juventus could accept a move for Paul Pogba if they were to land Lucas in part-exchange for the former Red Devil.

He appears for now to be planning on staying, with the possible January departure of Jeremy Menez one way chances could open up for him.

"There is also fierce competition. But I intend to find my place in the team. I intend to come back stronger, with a new found energy. Not having been summoned by Luiz Felipe Scolari has made me even stronger mentally."

Lucas' progress is one to watch in January. Not an obvious mover in the transfer window, if when Ligue 1 resumes he is not back in the team, and PSG make big moves of their own, he could become a target for big clubs.

PSG are linked with trying to sign Juan Mata from Chelsea, and Paul Pogba, and deals could be struck to sell players to offset this financially, with Ezequiel Lavezzi and Javier Pastore linked outwards too. Lucas could net them the biggest return of the lot.
