Just when you thought Vincent Tan couldn’t make any more radical or bizarre decisions, the Metro has run a report that the Cardiff City owner has instructed the club to give preference to potential transfer signings with the number eight in their date of birth.
The Malaysian has ruffled more than a few feathers since he bought the club and as the fallout of Malky Mackay’s sacking settles down, it appears Tan wants the club to focus on the number which is ‘lucky’ in Malaysia.
Based on the report and that stipulation, we’ve taken a look at what could literally be Cardiff’s alternative shopping list heading into the January transfer window.
Louis Van Gaal - 08/08/51
It would be bizarre if Tan convinced the national coach of the Netherlands to move in at Cardiff but there are plenty of eights in hid DOB.
Louis Saha – 08/08/78
Could Tan tempt the former Manchester United striker out of retirement?
Kirk Broadfoot & Davon McTavish – 08/08/84
Blackpool defender Broadfoot could be tempted by the step up to Premier League level while the retired McTavish is another potential u-turn on retirement candidate.
Ryan Koolwijk - 08/08/85
Koolwijk is a very experienced holding midfielder who currently plays for NEC. His contract expires in the summer.
Vladimir Darida – 08/08/90
The midfielder only joined Freiburg from Viktoria Plzen last summer. He could be one of the harder targets for Tan and Cardiff to tempt away.
Nelson Oliveira – 08/08/91
The 22-year-old Portuguese striker is on loan at Rennes from Benfica, which suggests Benfica could be open to doing a permanent deal for him.
