Chelsea have long been linked with a move for Colombian front-man Radamel Falcao. Despite only recently signing for Monaco, in what was something of a left-field transfer last summer, Jose Mourinho’s men have been tipped to bring him to London at the end of the current campaign.
Monaco’s vice-president Vadim Vasilyev moved to quash those rumours earlier this month. But the latest stories emanating from France suggest Falcao could have a new strike-partner next season…or should that be a replacement?
Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo has picked up on French reports claiming the free-spending Ligue 1 side have a new "objective" – to sign Atletico Madrid’s man-of-the-moment Diego Costa.
Costa has himself been linked with both Chelsea and Arsenal in recent weeks, and while a move in January is completely out of the question given the La Liga side’s current form, a summer switch could be possible if his £32million release-clause is paid.
That is something the latest report claims is not a problem for Claudio Ranieri’s club. And given their spending last summer – including the £50million signing of Falcao – it is clear there are considerable funds to spend if and when required.
The question is not if Monaco could afford Costa, but if the Brazilian would want to sign for them. If he does, and it is a big if, Chelsea may finally get the chance to sign the man who would turn them into a terrifying proposition both domestically and in Europe.
