A solitary goal from the out-of-sorts Olivier Giroud saw them come away from St James Park with a vital 1-0 win in the North East - and will now see in the New Year as Premier League leaders, and rightly so, they have been the best Premier League side this calendar year.
The fact they won this tough looking tie was made all the more impressive by those that were not present - as their best player this season and their most expensive player were both ruled out injured.
Aaron Ramsey has a groin strain picked up on Boxing Day so missed the fixture - but the news that £42.4 million playmaker Mesut Ozil had fallen awkwardly on his shoulder would have caused the most concern among Gunners fans.
He has been ruled out for two to three games - meaning he is not likely to play against Cardiff City or in the FA Cup game against North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
But just because he couldn’t play today does not mean he wasn’t backing his team-mates.
The German international took to Twitter to continually show his support for the team - and after the game he made it clear how happy he was with result.
Here is his Tweet…
Good job my friends. I am proud of you.— Mesut Özil (@MesutOzil1088) December 29, 2013
