Newcastle United 0-1 Arsenal: Giroud ensures Gunners end 2013 top of the pile

Arsenal beat Newcastle United 1-0 at St James' Park today.

A single goal from Olivier Giroud gave Arsenal all three points against Newcastle United earlier today, and ensured the Gunners finished the year top of the Premier League.

In what was something of a scrappy game, chances were at a premium, with only eight shots on target in the entire match.

The Magpies had the chance to go ahead through Moussa Sissoko, but the midfielder was thwarted by Wojciech Szczesny before Mathieu Debuchy's header struck the bar.

With just 25 minutes of normal-time to play, Giroud headed in a Theo Walcott free-kick and the visitors stood firm to ensure they travelled back to London with all three points.

Arsene Wenger's men are one point clear of Manchester City at the top of the table, while Newcastle are seventh.
