Olivier Giroud has not scored in over a month ... can he do it v Newcastle United today?
Coming into this season I was backing Olivier Giroud to the hills to have a 30-goal campaign. Historically he is a player who takes a season to settle at his new side - but then fires on all cylinders in his sophomore year.
At first it looked as though I was right. He bagged an impressive five goals in his first six games of the season - with assists to add to boot.
But he is now on something of a barren spell - not scoring since he was gifted a brace by Southampton goalie Artur Boruc on the 23rd November.
Many people say this is down to tiredness. As the sole front-man in this Arsenal squad he certainly has been asked to play plenty of football. Just half way through the season and Giroud already has 31 appearances for club and country. Giroud however downplays this argument.
Now the French international, who is always good with the media, has been speaking about his month long barren spell to French station Canal +.
"It is always, to be polite, a bit boring for a striker not scoring, not to find the net …There is a lack of efficiency, success and a little luck and then there are times when you're a little less in the right place at the right time. These things were fairly good for me early in the season. I try to concentrate on work, we must not fall into doubt in such periods. A month, I've had worse. I know my qualities and I know it will come back very quickly. As long as the team wins and we're playing good football…”
Indeed it must be boring for him. Arsenal take on Newcastle today and then the January window is just around the corner - so he can potentially begin wishing for some reinforcements before long.
But as he said if Arsenal keep winning games - he cannot be too upset.
