This time last year, the mere suggestion that AC Milan and Italy winger Stephan El Shaarawy could be leaving the club would have been met with indignation, despair and laughter.
In what was a troubled season for the Rossoneri the forward was the only shining light for the club and saw him become one of the most highly regarded young footballers on the planet.
But this campaign has been far from similar.
He has struggled to retain that form and has therefore seen his playing time diminish - in fact he has played just 134 Serie A minutes this campaign.
So it was no surprise to see him being linked with a January exit. Former club Genoa were the favourites to snap him up - but many Premier League teams were also said to be interested in the player.
He was certainly all set to leave - at least on a loan deal. His chances of making the Italy squad for next summer’s world cup dwindled with every minute of football he wasn’t playing - so it is no surprise that he wanted at least a temporary move.
But that now looks like it will not be happening.
He has posted this picture on his official Twitter account …
Un saluto a tutti..intervento ok..spero davvero di rientrare il prima possibile,passerà anche questa..Vi abbraccio! pic.twitter.com/egCpl9fCmx— Stephan El Shaarawy (@OfficialEl92) December 28, 2013
He is now out until the middle of March after undergoing surgery on a problematic foot that has plagued him all season.
Nobody will want to bring a player in who is only likely to be 100% fit for the final month or two of the season.
Nope, it looks like El Shaarawy is going nowhere.
