If the England team had to be picked right now - No Wilshere, Lampard or Townsend

England V Brazil

Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, Southampton, Stoke City, Everton and West Brom players feature.

Here is our England team, if it had to be picked right now...

GOALKEEPERS

Joe Hart

Despite his difficulties this season - he has to be England’s number one.

Ben Foster

Best English shot stopper at the moment. If he’s fit he goes.

Jack Butland

Why not take a youngster as third-choice to get the feel of a tournament in the furthest reaches of the world.

DEFENDERS

Glen Johnson

Hands down our best right back at the moment and should be one of the first names on the team sheet.

Jon Flanagan

My first big shock, but this Engfland under-21 international is certainly playing better than the erratic Kyle Walker at the moment - even Joel Ward at Crystal Palace is doing better than him..

Leighton Baines

First choice left-back and deservedly so.

Kieran Gibbs

We are unlikely to win the competition so why not start the transition into the future. Ashley Cole is on the way down so bring Gibbs along, or Luke Shaw, as back-up to Baines.

Phil Jagielka

Has been in great form for Everton and is a regular for Hodgson.

Chris Smalling

Versatile, if not inconsistent, but has recently shown improvement.

Gary Cahill

Another Hodgson favourite who has beaten off the competition of David Luiz at club level - a certain starter.

MIDFIELDERS

Phil Jones

Jamie Carragher, Owen Hargreaves … Phil Jones? Every England team has a utility man and Manchester United’s Jones is that.

Steven Gerrard

The captain, and a sure thing for Brazil … if fit.

Michael Carrick

A tough call because he has also been injured recently. But his calming influence in the heart of midfield will be needed in Brazil.

Ross Barkley

Simply put he has to go, and not just as a squad player. The Everton man has been in great form this season and gets the nod ahead of Jack Wilshere - who is more trouble than he is worth right now.

Jordan Henderson

I never rated Henderson, but this season he has been incredible for Liverpool and may have a chance of being a starter.

Adam Lallana

A fantastic season behind him so far - Southampton do not tick without him.

James Milner

Again a reliable and versatile player. Not a starter but can do a job in sticky situations.

FORWARDS

Theo Walcott

Showed what he brings to the party against West Ham. Fighting fit now and ready to go.

Danny Welbeck

Finally starting to show his worth for United in recent weeks, and an excellent player for England.

Jay Rodriguez

He struggled on his England debut … but you could put that down to nerves for sure. Currently one of the most in form Englishman in the Premier League and if he carries on he must go.

Wayne Rooney

Simply put our most naturally gifted footballer. Incredible on the ball and off - he is the first name of the team-sheet.

Daniel Sturridge

If he is fit then Sturridge needs to go. Can he reproduce his Liverpool form for England?

Raheem Sterling

My wildcard. Leaving Andros Townsend out as he is too one-dynamic to function as part of a winning team - something AVB figured out towards the end of his Spurs career.

Notable absentees

John Ruddy, Kyle Walker, Joleon Lescott, Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard, Jack Wilshere, Tom Cleverley, Jermain Defoe, Andros Townsend.

Who would you take to the World Cup if you had to choose right now?
