Given all the speculation surrounding Ezequiel Garay, it is somewhat surprising that he is not yet playing in England.
After all, this is the defender who has been tipped to move to Manchester United on too many occasions to count, while Chelsea have been linked with the Argentine international both in the past and again more recently.
So what does the player make of all the attention? Is a move on the cards, or is he perfectly happy where he is.
In an interview with QuatroQuatroDois – or FourFourTwo for those whose Portuguese is a little rusty – Garay spoke of his feelings towards Benfica, and his opinion of one of the managers said to be monitoring him – Jose Mourinho.
In quotes picked up by A Bola, the defender said of the Chelsea manager, “He is one of the best coaches in the world and I learnt a lot from him (during his time at Real Madrid).”
He also compared Mourinho with his current coach, Jorge Jesus, saying, “They live and work football.”
There is little doubt Garay admires the self-proclaimed Special One. But despite his words of praise the same interview suggested he would not be leaving for London, or anywhere else for that matter, just yet.
Saying it was the “right decision” to join Benfica, Garay added, “I would be happy to continue at Benfica, because it is a club that gives me the opportunity to do what I like most which is playing football. I have a contract and I am very happy here. I just think of Benfica.”
So while those words may not put to bed the regular rumours surrounding the defender, it appears as much as he admires his former manager, his current one has enough respect for Garay to remain.
