When Chelsea let Nemanja Matic head to Benfica as part of the deal that saw David Luiz go the other way in 2011, we doubt they thought that in 2014 he would be wanted by their current boss, while Luiz languished on the side-lines.
But that is the way fate transpired in his case.
He could have left last summer, but in the end decided to stay for ‘one more year’ at the Lisbon club. So now, with just six months left of that year the vultures are circling on Matic like a new singleton.
Chelsea in particular are said to be very interested in picking up the player - and the fact he shares an agent with Jose Mourinho certainly makes things easier.
He is certainly going to cost them a fair bob. They let him go for nothing, but he has been valued as high as €50 million in the Portuguese press recently - so he is certainly going to cost Chelsea if they want to bring him back.
But what would be more embarrassing would be if their once highly unpopular ex-interim boss snapped him up for ambitious Italian side Napoli.
However that might be what happens. Napoli have today been linked with a move for the player as Rafa Benitez wants to add some steel to his midfield in January.
Benitez’s last job before taking over from Walter Mazzarri at the Stadio San Paulo was as the ‘interim boss’ at Chelsea.
Because of his previous run-ins with the club whilst the Liverpool gaffer he was widely unloved at Stamford Bridge - with some fans not even won over with what generally were impressive performances on the pitch - and a Europa League triumph.
But if he was to snap up a player they let go and turn him into a star - then he really will be giving The Blues … the blues.
