Liverpool's worst 5 moments of 2013

Luis Suarez Bite

Liverpool enjoyed a year to remember in 2013 - but it was not without its ups and downs. Here are the Reds' biggest low-points of the calendar year.

5. Europa League elimination

Liverpool seemed to get their worst moments of 2013 out of the way early.

One of their more forgettable memories came in February, when the Reds were knocked out of the Europa League by Zenit.

A 2-0 defeat in Russia meant Brendan Rodgers' side were up against it at Anfield and, despite another famous European night in which Liverpool won 3-1, the Reds were eventually knocked out on away goals.

4. Upset by Oldham in the FA Cup

Even earlier in the year, Liverpool suffered another cup exit - and this one was all the more embarrassing.

In a competition they had reached the final in the previous season, the Reds succumbed to League One side Oldham Athletic after a 3-2 loss.

To make matters worse, Oldham sacked their manager Paul Dickov shortly after because they had lost the majority of their league games that season. Just Liverpool's luck.

3. Southampton do the double

Despite 2013 being a year in which Liverpool comfortably dispatched most of their opponents at one time or another, Southampton were a team the Reds failed to get the better of both times they played them.

The 1-0 defeat to the Saints at Anfield this season - when Jose Fonte scored the winner - was bad enough.

The 3-1 loss at St Mary's last term, however, took the notion of disappointment to a whole new level. It seems Liverpool will have to wait until 2014 to get their revenge on Mauricio Pochettino and his charges.

2. Suarez bite

A memory that once more saw Luis Suarez steal the headlines for all the wrong reasons, the Uruguayan's nibble on Branislav Ivanovic's arm during Liverpool's 2-2 draw with Chelsea was a moment to forget for every Reds fan the world across.

Rodgers' side had done superbly to earn a positive result against Rafa Benitez's Blues but Suarez unnecessarily diverted all eyes on to him yet again.

The bite brought him a ten-game ban. Good old Luis.

1. Suarez wants to go to Arsenal

No matter how bad things got for Suarez at Anfield, however, the last thing any Liverpool fan would have wanted was for the 26-year-old to leave Merseyside.

On current form, Suarez could probably go on to bite an army of defenders and still be considered invaluable at Liverpool - but his beautiful (and troubled) relationship with the club almost came to a premature end this summer.

In a series of ploys to try and leave Anfield - including public interviews and misleading press conferences in his home country of Uruguay - Suarez declared his interest in a sensational move to Arsenal.

The deal did not occur in the end - but Suarez's transfer threats were most definitely the worst - and scariest - moment for Liverpool fans in 2013.
