Tottenham Hostpur midfielder Erik Lamela is said to be a traget now for La Liga side Atletico Madrid.
Lamela, a reported £30m signing from Serie A side Roma, has struggled to settle in North London and has repeatedly been linked with a move back to Italy. According to the Gazzetta dello Sport, Atletico Madrid have joined the race to sign him and could possibly make an offer as early as January.
The 21-year-old midfielder has barely been involved in the Premier League, and when introduced looks overwhelmed by the speed and ferocity of the English game.
The Argentine has made just three Premier League starts since making the move to Tottenham, and has come off the bench a further five times. With a total of just seven shots, six key passes and one assist whilst involved in Premier League games, Lamela's lack of attacking intuition has raised a few eyebrows, with some already labelling the former Roma star a flop.
Averaging just 20 passes whilst on the pitch, plus being dispossessed a total eleven times, it would seem he has struggled to create space to receive the ball. And at times, he been a careless when in possession.
His performances so far have done little to justify the reported £30m Tottenham paid for him, and unfortunately for the Argentine he doesn’t seem to be in the plans of new manager Tim Sherwood.
The new Indonesian millionaire owner of Inter Milan, Erick Thohir, has stated his intentions of helping Inter become a force in Serie A once more, and is said to have begun negotiations with both Tottenham for Lamela and PSG for Ezequiel Lavezzi.
According to the Italian paper, Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid are also on the hunt for a new midfielder, possibly a replacement for the much coveted Koke, and the Argentine coach has singled out Lamela as a possible solution.
