Five players Chelsea should be glad they DIDN'T sign in the summer

Imbula Marseille

We look at the Roma, Marseille, Schalke 04, Fiorentina and Manchester United players that Chelsea may have dodged a bullet on.

So we are about to exit the 2013 stage of the 2013-14 season and enter into a new year - so we were wondering if there were any players that Chelsea linked with this summer, that Chelsea fans will be glad they didn’t sign.

Sure they will be glad they got hold of the likes of Willian but they were also found wanting in their pursuit of Wayne Rooney and let Romelu Lukaku go out on loan - so it was a mixed summer transfer window. But are there any players they are glad they did not see walk through the entrance at Stamford Bridge.

Here are five…

Adem Ljajic

The former Manchester United trainee was linked with several clubs this summer - but eventually stayed in Italy by joining AS Roma.

However he may be regretting his Fiorentina exit now. He was all geared up to be a regular in Florence but has so far struggled for regular football at the Stadio Olimpico.

Gilbert Imbula

There is no doubting the talent of this powerful defensive midfielder, also linked with Arsenal in the summer.

However he headed off to Marseille - and has been nothing but a nuisance since.

Recently involved in a dressing room bust-up with Florian Thauvin, and part of the split between young and old that has divided the dressing room in the Velodrome, who’d have thought he could be a more disruptive impact than Joey Barton.

Kyriakos Papadopoulos

Quite a number of teams in the Premier League were linked with the Greek this summer - but Chelsea reportedly ‘agreed’ a deal in May.

Bet they are glad they didn’t - because he has been injured most of the season, playing just two minutes of Bundesliga football.

Mario Gomez

The German international desired a change of scenery at the start of the new season, and soon decided on a move away from Bayern Munich.

Chelsea were said to be keen - but Fiorentina eventually got their man for €20 million.

Bullet dodged, because he has only played three Serie A games before suffering a nasty knee injury which continues to rule him out of action.

Marouane Fellaini

Before he joined Manchester United he was linked with Arsenal and Chelsea in a £20 million switch.

In the end he went to United for much more then that - and in the end he has proved to be an unsuccessful signing so far, and is now out injured until the New Year.
