Top five January sale bargains of the transfer window

Xabi Alonso

Potential targets for Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, and Manchester City feature.

Who should your side be looking to pick up in the sales?

1) Jeremy Menez

With the arrivals of a star-studded cast at the Parc des Princes, this 26-year-old winger has found it difficult to cement his place in the first team with Paris Saint-Germain. He’s valued around £16.5 million but given his imminently expiring contract, he could very well be offloaded for half that fee. As a senior France international who adds a high number of assists there ought to be a number of clubs in Europe vying for his signature.

2) Blaise Matuidi

Another PSG player whose contract expires in 2014 is this highly rated 26-year-old midfielder. The senior France international has, like his aforementioned colleague, found it increasingly difficult to get regular starts in the French capital and with the World Cup in Brazil next summer, he’ll likely do all he can to change that. He is valued around £16 million but could be signed for closer to £7 million with clubs like Manchester United and Real Madrid reportedly monitoring him.

3) Xabi Alonso

Over at the Bernabeu, former Liverpool midfielder and Spain veteran Alonso could be on the move with his contract up in June. He is linked with a return to Anfield as well as a potential reunion with Jose Mourinho at Chelsea but given his high wages, he could be available for around a third of his £16 million valuation. At 32 years old, he’s still got plenty of gas left in the tank and with his honours and experience at the highest level he’d be an absolute steal for whoever wins his affections in the New Year.

4) Igor Akinfeev

Goalkeeper may very well be trending in January with long-serving CSKA Moscow stopper and Russia international Akinfeev yet to tie down his future at the club he has spent almost 23 years with, he could be available for much less than his £17.5 million valuation. At 27 years old he combines experience with physical maturity and is the perfect age to be a first choice between the sticks at another top club on the continent.

5) Victor Valdes

Another top goalkeeper yet to commit his future is, of course, Barcelona stopper Valdes who has been linked with a number of potential moves all summer long and ahead of the New Year. At 31, he’s still in his prime years for a keeper and is worth far more than his £8.8 million valuation due to his immense quality and experience. He has almost 400 appearances under his belt for the Catalans as well as 6 La Liga titles and three Champions League titles and would be a real bargain if his potential suitors can convince him his future lies away from the Camp Nou.
