Southampton were in complete control as they comfortably saw off Cardiff City in Wales to take three points.
Goals from Jay Rodriguez and Rickie Lambert allowed the Saints to open up a big advantage in the first-half and a lead which they never gave back.
Rodriguez grabbed his first goal inside the 14th minute with a neat finish following a great piece of play from England international Adam Lallana. Rodriguez then grabbed his second when he turned the defender and cracked in a half volley following Lambert’s cross.
Roles then reversed and it was Lambert who scored when he poked home following a good header from Rodriguez, which signalled a torrent of unrest from Cardiff City fans sat in the stands.
Cardiff battled away but they were unable to force a single shot on target as they conceded nearly two thirds of possession, which made their job even more difficult than it already was.
Peter Whittingham and Frazier Campbell both had decent chances for the home team but they were unable to force Paulo Gazzaniga into making a save.
