On this day: Arshavin to Reading, Hart blunder and seven goal Old Trafford thriller

On the 26th December 2012 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, Reading, Manchester United, Newcastle United, Manchester City and Sunderland.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 26th December 2013, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 26th December 2012…

Bring him Arshav-in

Andrey Arshavin was being heavily linked with a move to Reading. The Russian, once the clubs record signing, was not getting any football at The Emirates - and his contract was expiring in the summer.

Arshavin was rumoured to be keen on an England stay - and in particular the London area.

Reading owner Anton Zingarevich was said to be a fan of his countryman and the idea of a loan-move leading to a Bosman transfer appealed to the Berkshire club.

But in the end a deal never happened - and he moved to Zenit St Petersburg instead … so much for that whole stay in London nonsense then?

Seven heaven

Manchester United and Newcastle United played out a Boxing Day thriller at Old Trafford. Seven goals were shared between the old foes as United ran out 4-3 victors.

Goals from Jonny Evans, Patrice Evra, Robin van Persie and a last minute Javier Hernandez strike earned them the win despite goals from James Perch, Evans (OG) and Papiss Cisse for the visitors.

Hart attack

A blunder from Joe Hart cost Manchester City at the Stadium of Light - as City’s bogey team once again haunted them in the North East.

Sunderland claimed a 1-0 win against the Premier League champions - when former City star Adam Johnson caught the England keeper out at his near-post from range- as City continued to lose ground in the title race to their neighbours.
