Prior to Christmas, reports circulated claiming Chelsea were readying a double-swoop for two of Benfica’s prize-assets.
Former Blues midfielder Nemanja Matic was tipped (not for the first time) with a return to Stamford Bridge, while his teammate Lazar Markovic was also linked with a £12million move to London.
The Mirror reported that Benfica officials were in talks with Chelsea about a possible January move for the 19-year-old. However, Markovic’s agent has now dismissed those claims.
A Bola has picked up on reports from Informer, in which Lazar’s agent is quoted as saying the following:
“Markovic is currently playing at Benfica, has a contract for four years and has no intention of going anywhere else.
“What was said about going to London is not true. He did not go to London, will not play at Chelsea.”
While many agents are keen to talk up potential moves in order to generate further interest or improved deals, Markovic’s representative appears to have made it pretty clear his client is going nowhere.
Reports of financial struggles at the Portuguese club mean players will continue to be tipped for the exit. But while Matic’s future appears a little less certain, it seems Lazar will not be a Chelsea player any time soon.
