Here's a comment sent in by one of our Southampton fans.
'Southampton may be a small club in relative terms, but we have a few things going for us that make strong:
- We are owned by billionaires and have no debt
- We continue to demonstrate that young players get opportunities to play for us
- Southampton fans do not want to sack the manager should we go through a bad run
- Our Chairman is arguably the most astute in the league - see how high rival clubs would need to go to get Shaw, Schneiderlin, Jrod, Clyne, Lovren, JWP, SRL, Llalana or Wanayama. Southampton's Chairman's won't be bullied into sell any of these guys on the cheap.
It continues to amaze me that likes of Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea fans still think that their clubs are an automatic destination for young talent. But, in truth, the fickle fans, cut throat Chairmen, reliance upon so called 'big names', etc, often means that clubs like these aren't attractive to youngsters trying to make their way in the game.
Young players like these want first team football, protection from the media, loyal fans and the best academy in the UK - in short, many of them want to come start their careers and play for Southampton.
