We look back at January, the opening month of an interesting 2013 for Liverpool, as the year comes to an end.
What were the big stories from that month?
Liverpool comfortably beat Sunderland at Anfield. Raheem Sterling opened the scoring before a Luis Suarez brace finished things off.
Daniel Sturridge signed from Chelsea. The striker signed for an undisclosed fee after becoming frustrated at the lack of first-team football at Chelsea.
Adam Morgan was loaned to Rotherham United.
Liverpool allowed Joe Cole to join West Ham on a free transfer. The midfielder never settled at Anfield and was allowed his move back down south after struggling to find is feet on Merseyside.
A controversial goal from Luis Suarez saw Liverpool through in the FA Cup v Mansfield. Daniel Sturridge scored the other goal in a 2-1 win on his debut.
Suarez was heavily criticised for using his hand in the scoring of the winning goal v Mansfield.
Brendan Rodgers stated his belief that Liverpool should be bringing through more local youth lads.
Liverpool were considering offering Kenny Dalgish a role as club ambassador.
Nuri Sahin was allowed to terminate his loan at Liverpool. He spent the rest of the season and has remained at Borussia Dortmund ever since.
Liverpool lost to old foes Manchester United. Despite Sturridge scoring again the damage had already been done by Robin van Persie and Nemanja Vidic.
An Anfield redevelopment was dubbed ‘on-track’ with a planning application being drawn up.
Liverpool were rumoured to be after Wesley Sneijder … if he took a paycut.
Liverpool thrashed Norwich 5-0. Luis Suarez was the star of the show
Sneijder signed for Galatasaray … despite Liverpool’s apparent interest.
Liverpool were nearing the completion of a new signing. Philippe Coutinho was said to be on his way from Inter Milan.
Liverpool were reportedly waiting to sign Marco Rojas, a New Zealand international, when his contract expired in the summer.
Liverpool reportedly upped their bid for Coutinho after interest from Southampton and a stalemate in discussions with Inter Milan.
A fee was finally agreed for Coutinho - in the region of £8.5 million.
Liverpool were embarrassed by Oldham in the FA Cup. They lost 3-2 as goals from Matt Smith (2) and Reece Wabara saw the League One side do the trick.
Liverpool confirmed the signing of Philippe Coutinho from Inter Milan. He signed a long-term contract with the club:
"I'm feeling very happy, it's a very important step in my career and I'm expecting to come here and play good football to give my contribution on the pitch.”
Liverpool went 2-0 up v Arsenal but were pegged back twice and drew 2-2in the Premier League.
Liverpool sold Alexander Doni to Botafogo.
Dani Pacheco joined Huesca on loan.
