Five players Manchester United should be glad they DIDN'T sign in the summer

Thiago Alcantara

We look at the Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, PSV Eindhoven, Athletic Bilbao and AS Monaco players that Manchester United may have dodged a bullet on.

So we are about to exit the 2013 stage of the 2013-14 season and enter into a new year - so we were wondering if there were any players that Manchester United were linked with this summer, that United fans will be glad they didn’t sign.

United had a bad Transfer Window with only Marouane Fellaini arriving, and he has himself been a disappointment, so it would surely be difficult to discover players they were linked with that they should be glad they missed out on.

But here are five they should be pleased didn’t arrive, at least not for now…

Ander Herrera

Don’t get me wrong, Herrera is very talented and would make a great acquisition. But United made the right call on this decision by deciding not to pay the extortionate price-tag labelled on him by the Basque club.

He has struggled to be a regular in the first-team in Bilbao this season - and it is hard to see if would have greatly improved this United midfield.

Geoffrey Kondogbia

The French youngster was again expensive from Sevilla and was linked with Chelsea and Arsenal as well.

United’s interest was fleeting, as he joined Monaco before it could gain momentum.

But he has struggled in the principality and is not currently a starting player.

Ilkay Gundogan

A controversial one perhaps, because obviously he would be a great signing for United.

But not this season. He has been out injured for the majority of the campaign, playing just over 50 minutes of Bundesliga football after suffering a back injury.

He is not expected back until 2014 - and would have been an expensive ornament on the treatment table.

Thiago Alcantara

Again, in a similar way to Gundogan, the now Bayern Munich player has suffered with injury this term.

With that in mind he might have been a great buy in January - but they should be glad they didn’t buy him in the summer.

Zakaria Bakkali

The talented winger caught the eye early in the season for PSV Eindhoven - with a hat-trick against NAC Breda.

But since then he has been in poor form - as have his club.
