On this day: Van Persie 'could have been killed'; Arsenal told no in Barca striker pursuit

On the 24th December 2012 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, Manchester United, Swansea City and Tottenham Hotspur.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 24th December 2013, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 24th December 2012…

Arsene Villa

Arsenal were told to forget about signing David Villa. Arsene Wenger was one of many managers said to be casting his eye over the Spanish veteran as he sought striking reinforcements.

However Barca made it clear he was going nowhere:

In January we will keep Villa.

"It is important to remember that Barcelona is a club that habitually does not accept offers for star players in January."

He could have killed the lad

Sir Alex Ferguson may have been fuming - but the FA decided not to charge Swansea City defender Ashley Williams for kicking the ball at Robin Van Persie’s face from point blank rage.

Fergie was fuming - although may have overreacted somewhat with these claims:

“It was absolutely deliberate. The whistle has gone, the game has stopped and he has done that right in front of the referee - he could have killed the lad. It was a disgraceful act by the player, he should banned for a long time.”

Sneij try

Tottenham were apparently all set to sign Wesley Sneijder. It was all the rage in Italy 12 months ago today, as they felt the Inter Milan player was on his way to White Hart Lane.

Of course that did not happen, instead he signed for Galatasaray.
