The Gunners coach has stated that the mercurial German is in need of a rest, but that he will start against the west London outfit.
The Germany international has been a key man for the Gunners since becoming the club’s record transfer signing in the summer, and will be unleashed against the Blues.
When asked about Ozil’s physical state, Arsene Wenger admitted that the player could do with a rest, but wouldn’t be getting it against Chelsea.
“In Germany and most of Europe they have Christmas off and at some stage I will have to give him a break,” the French coach admitted. “But Monday night? No.”
Ozil has been a driving force in Arsenal’s attacking play since moving to the Emirates Stadium from Real Madrid in the summer, and has already started 13 Premier League games for his new club.
In this time the playmaker has risen to the top of the assists ladder in the division, and is joint with Wayne Rooney having provided the creative force for seven of Arsenal’s goals – he has also scored four himself.
Another interesting sub-plot will be Ozil’s reunion with former boss Jose Mourinho, who coached him at Real Madrid.
The German has been one of the stars of this Premier League season, but arguably his quietest games came against Manchester United and City in away defeats.
As such, Oil will be keen to prove himself against another title rival.
