One man that has seen his standing at Manchester United fall since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson is Alexander Buttner, who has found himself on the fringes of things under David Moyes.
The Dutch defender was brought to Old Trafford in August 2012, and was seemingly being lined up as Patrice Evra’s long-term replacement.
However, under Moyes the former Vitesse Arnhem star has only made two Premier League appearances this season, with just one start.
Adding to Buttner’s woes, United look likely to move for Leighton Baines in the January transfer window once more, with a new left-back one of the Scottish manager’s priorities.
As such, the 24-year-old is being linked with a move elsewhere, with sources in Italy suggesting a switch to Serie A could be on the cards in the new year.
Sky Italia are suggesting that Genoa are keen to sign Buttner once the window reopens, and will propose both loan and permanent options to the Premier League champions.
One way or the other, the Serie A outfit look more likely to be able to offer Buttner time on the pitch, with Baines’ arrival more than likely ending the Dutchman’s time in Manchester.
