Atletico Madrid close to signing Chelsea midfielder ?

Kevin De Bruyne

Schalke 04's general manager suggests Atletico Madrid's interest in Chelsea’s Kevin De Bruyne.

Chelsea’s De Bruyne, 22, has been attracting a lot of attention recently, as the Belgian international hasn’t been featuring for Jose Mourinho’s Blues.

De Bruyne, who was a reported £7m signing from Belgian side Genk in 2012, has only made 2 starts in the Premier League this term and has mainly sat on the bench, looking on as the likes of Mata, Willian, Schurrle and Oscar have featured.

Whilst on the pitch, De Bruyne hasn’t really done enough to put himself into contention. With just the four shots, one assist and 76 total passes, he hasn’t yet offered Chelsea and Mourinho anything compelling to suggest he deserves automatic selection.

And with Chelsea knocked out of the League Cup, and facing stronger opposition in the Champions League, the Belgian midfielder could see his first-team opportunities even further reduced.

Both Bayer Leverkusen and Schalke 04 were thought to be the leading contenders for De Bruyne's signature, but the latter seems to have pulled out of the race.

In fact, Schalke 04's general manager, Horst Heldt, spoke to Germany's Sport Bild, and played down his side’s chances of signing the Chelsea player.

‘De Bruyne won’t be going to Germany. We expect, without doubt, that Atletico Madrid could resume their interest in him'.

Whether any deal is a short-term loan or not remains to be seen, but De Bruyne’s future at Chelsea looks to be drawing to a close (at least for the moment).
