Rafael van der Vaart scored a goal this weekend which would have been very emotional indeed.
In the past football has been described as a matter of life and death - in fact it has infamously been proclaimed as more important than either.
But there are often occasions when the footballing back-drop pales into insignificance as a more poignant subplot bubbles to the surface.
Such a situation is what befell the Hamburg v Mainz game at the Imtech Arena this weekend - a Bundesliga thriller that finished 3-2.
But despite defeat there was one moment which dominated the headlines - a goal from a Tottenham cult hero.
Rafael van der Vaart still retains a special place in his heart for Tottenham Hotspur and the fans share that feeling toward the Dutch playmaker.
But Hamburg has become his new home - and the fans there treat him as one of their own - and he has needed their support recently.
Yesterday’s game was his first in front of his home support since his fiancé Sabia Boulahrouz, the ex-wife of former Chelsea player Khalid, unfortunately suffered a miscarriage five months into pregnancy.
RVDV wore boots on the day adorned with the name they had already decided for their daughter, Solana, and Sabia was in attendance to see her man play his first game at home since the 2nd November.
And when he scored to equalise in the 79th minute he quickly let his emotions spill over by making a love-heart sign to Sabia in the crowd - in memoriam of their untimely tragedy.
"This goal was for them."
A sad story indeed, but we hope that the pair remain as strong as they appeared at the game - and hopefully one day they can welcome a child into this world.
