Recently there has much hype over the performances of former Arsenal flop Gervinho. When he was sold in the summer, we imagine a few more extravagant Gunners’ fans popped a champagne cork or two - we are looking at you Piers Morgan.
However under Rudi Garcia at new club AS Roma he has been reborn.
Recently dubbed ‘the African Messi’ he has been one of the most consistent and outstanding performers in Serie A - as AS Roma keep pace with Juventus in the title challenge.
The Ivorian became something of a running joke at The Emirates - with his poor strike rate and perpetually tangled feet leaving most Arsenal fans flabbergasted at the fact they paid £10.8 million for him.
His miss at Bradford City last season was, for many, the final straw.
But today he showed Arsenal fans a little glimpse of the ‘old Gervinho’ - with a stunning miss that makes that Bradford horror show look as difficult as a moon landing.
He followed up on Francesco Totti’s saved effort to tap into an empty net - but instead hammered the ball against the post - to the stunned disbelief of the Stadio Olimpico.
But that didn’t get him down. He went on to add the fourth goal in a 4-0 romp over Catania.
So don’t laugh too much at his original misfortune - although the goal is certainly not the purest strike you’ll ever see.
