Ahead of the Arsenal versus Chelsea showdown on Monday, December 23 at the Emirates Stadium, Blues boss Jose Mourinho has moved to commend the quality of Gunners trequartista Mesut Ozil, acquired by Arsene Wenger at the climax of the summer transfer window for a club record £42.4m.
Mourinho had the luxury of coaching Ozil as the two were both at Real Madrid at the same time and has labeled the German as 'phenomenal'.
At Real Madrid, Ozil was responsible for an assist return of 71 with 27 direct goals from 159 matches in all competitions. He was also accurate with 85% of his 6,675 passes from 11,424 minutes.
While Ozil has not won over all pundits in Britain, wholly because he is deemed to be inconsistent, he is still statistically impressive in English football having returned nine assists and five goals from 20 games whilst completing 87% of his 1,232 passes from 1,697 minutes.
As quoted by The Mirror, Mourinho said: 'He's one of those players that you buy to complete the jigsaw when you build your team. There are players who you buy and you know it will require work to mould them to your style and to get the best out of them.
'But Ozil needs nothing. He arrived, Arsene gave him the shirt and he immediately started playing and immediately the team became better. He is a phenomenal player.'
