Liverpool latest: Suarez is a record-breaker; Rodgers dampens expectations

All the news, views and transfer rumours from Anfield this weekend…

Liverpool soared to the top of the Premier League on Saturday with a 3-1 victory over Cardiff City at Anfield.

Luis Suarez stole the headlines once more with a brace, while Raheem Sterling netted yet again. Cardiff scored the only goal of the second-half through Jordon Mutch, but the Reds won with ease and will be hoping Arsenal and Chelsea both drop points when they face each other tomorrow evening.

While Suarez and Sterling netted the goals, Jordan Henderson earned many of the plaudits with another impressive performance, suggesting he can be a huge player for Liverpool in the seasons to come.

Speaking to the BBC after the match, Reds boss Brendan Rodgers played down his side’s title chances, suggesting the onus was still very much on Manchester City.

I still believe the title is Manchester City’s to lose,” he said. “They have the strongest squad. The resources they have are incredible.”

Mind games or a simple statement of fact? Only Rodgers knows for certain.

There is no doubt Suarez has been integral in Liverpool’s form thus far, and his teammate Lucas has been speaking of his pleasure that the Uruguayan has signed a new deal.

Speaking to the club’s TV channel, Lucas said, “What he is doing this season and what he has done in the past few seasons he deserved that (his new contract).

It is a positive message because the owners and manager said they want to keep their best players and at the moment he is not only our best player but the best player in the league.”

And that is something backed up by statistics, with the Liverpool Echo reporting that Suarez has broken the record for the most goals scored in a calendar month since the Premier League began.

He already has 10 in December, and could increase that in the upcoming matches against Chelsea and Manchester City.
