It seems that every week, Manchester United send scouts to watch Sporting Lisbon in action. And every week, it is claimed the man most likely to be their reason for travel is William Carvalho.
The Portuguese midfielder is enjoying an outstanding season for his current club, and has generated more headlines than most in the latest incarnation of the rumour mill.
With a €45million release-clause in his contract, the 21-year-old will not come cheap, but United are in desperate need of a quality midfielder and Carvalho could well be that man.
However, Arsenal could throw a considerable spanner in the works with reports claiming they too are considering a move for the player.
The stories first came out at the start of December, with the Express claiming Arsenal were just as keen as United to sign one of Sporting’s lowest-paid players.
And according to Portuguese newspaper Record, both clubs sent scouts to watch Sporting on Saturday evening, as they played out a 0-0 draw with Nacional.
While it is unknown who David Moyes and Arsene Wenger were keen to keep tabs on, Carvalho appears the most likely.
With January fast-approaching, and the summer not too far behind, both clubs may have a decision to make – have all those air-miles proved Carvalho is worth a bid?
