Xabi Alonso’s future has generated much speculation in recent months, with the likelihood of him remaining at Real Madrid seemingly diminishing by the day.
Last month, Spanish newspaper El Confidencial claimed that if Alonso left the Bernabeu when his contract expired in the summer, it would be a straight choice between his former club Real Sociedad and a return to England, this time to play for Chelsea.
The report says Alonso has refused a number of requests from Real to discuss a new deal, stating that “everything points to his destination linked back to Jose Mourinho”.
“His understanding with Mourinho is unquestionable and many already see Alonso back in the Premier League,” the report claims.
The story concludes with the suggestion that Real are now working on bringing in an alternative – most likely Borussia Dortmund’s Ilkay Gundogan.
There is little doubt that Alonso would improve Chelsea’s midfield, and even at 32 he has much to give. It is testament to his ability and influence that Real are attempting – reportedly at every level from the fans to the boardroom – to convince him to stay.
But should he not, Chelsea may be securing an outstanding midfielder for little more than a signing-on fee.
