On this day: Walcott 'a gamble', Willian failed Chelsea move, Sterling deal

Raheem Sterling And Rodgers

On the 21st December 2012 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 21st December 2013, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 21st December 2012…

‘Wal’ of the dice

The Theo Walcott contract saga was raging on. The England international was approaching the end of his Arsenal deal, which was due to expire in the summer of 2013.

He had been linked with a number of clubs as it looked increasingly likely that he would be on his way out of the door at The Emirates.

And Arsene Wenger delivered his sternest message to his star forward a year ago today:

"What is important to keep the young players together is that at some stage I have stood up for them; I played you at 17, 18, 19 years of age and I know I took a gamble. Somewhere along the line they need to give back to the club what the club has given to them.”

Will.I.an going to Chelsea

Willian Borges da Silva was busy predicting the future. The Brazilian forward was at the time a Shakhtar Donetsk player and he came close to sealing a move to Stamford Bridge last summer.

But he still had his heart set on a move:

'If I tell you that I was happy, I would be lying. My desire was there, with a £20.3million offer from a big club like Chelsea. I wanted to pack my things and go, but I can’t do that as I am under contract.

He went on to sign for Anzhi Makhachkala in January and then agree a move to Tottenham in the summer - before finally getting his dream switch with a last minute change of heart.

Sterling stuff

Raheem Sterling signed on the dotted line of a new five-year deal at Liverpool. Sterling, who scored v Cardiff City today, was being linked with Arsenal and Manchester United 12 months ago.

But he signed a new deal - much to the delight of Brendan Rodgers and the Liverpool fans.
