Liverpool stormed to the top of the league thanks in no small part to another virtuoso performance by Uruguayan Luis Suarez
The Liverpool star yesterday announced that he had signed a new contract at Liverpool keeping him at the club until 2018. After keeping the captain's armband in Steven Gerrard's absence, we take a look at the forward's influence on the game, particularly interesting given that he had a hand in all three of his side's goals.
0' Luis Suarez leads Liverpool out as captain to a rousing reception having recently signed a new longterm contract at the club.
3' Joe Allen pulls it back for Suarez to fire into the side netting for the games first decent chance.
7' Raheem Sterling finds Suarez, whose effort is charged down by Andrew Taylor.
12' Intricate link up play between Suarez and Allen as the Reds nearly break into the box.
18' Suarez dribbles along the edge of the penalty area, unleashing a drive that is deflected wide.
25' GOAL: Henderson and Suarez link up, with the Englishman chipping the ball from the left to Suarez, who volleys home from the edge of the area.
33' The Uruguayan tries an audacious piece of skill to lift the ball over the defender in the box, only for the ball to be cleared for a corner.
39' Suarez plays an outstanding through ball to Raheem Sterling, who, when through on goal, sees his shot saved by David Marshall.
42' GOAL: Liverpool break the Cardiff offside trap as Suarez times his run just right to come from his own half, and get on the end of a great Henderson through ball. He then unselfishly squares to Sterling to tap home, who may or may not be just offside.
43' Suarez volleys just wide from a similar position to his first goal, as Sterling again breaks down the right.
45' GOAL: After fantastic work out wide, Suarez releases Flanagan down the left, and receives the ball back again before seemingly losing the ball, but it breaks to him again on the edge of the box, and he curls it fantastically into the far corner for his second.
HALF-TIME: Suarez leaves the field to applause and adoration after a scintillating first-half performance.
51' Coutinho and Suarez play a great one-two as they burst into the area. Only for the ball to fall to Henderson from range, the Englishman putting it well wide.
65' Conceded a free kick deep in his half, pulling down Kevin Theophile-Catherine with his trailing leg, that Ben Turner nearly looped over Simon Mignolet.
68' Suarez again forced the Cardiff defence into blocking one of his efforts, as Liverpool seize control of the match once more following Mutch's goal.
75' Suarez follows up on Sterling's saved effort, sending the ball just wide when he looked like pouncing for his hat-trick.
82' Suarez curls just wide from a similar position to where he scored his second goal, after a swift counter from the Reds.
90' Ran on to a ball late on, before firing low with his left - Marshall equal to his effort this time.
FULL-TIME: A much tougher second-half for the Uruguayan, but still an outstanding showing from the striker, leaving him with (at least) 19 goals before Christmas, a Premier League record. All the more astounding given that he missed the first five games of the season.
