Chelsea to use Lukaku as bait to land free-scoring Arsenal target

Reports in the European press are suggesting that the Belgian could be a makeweight in the Blues’ attempts to sign Diego Costa.

Chelsea and Arsenal have been heavily linked with a move for in-form Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa this week, with a potential January move supposedly in the offing.

With the Brazil-born forward in devastating form in front of goal, the Spanish capital city side will be very reluctant to sell their star man – but reports of a player-plus-cash deal on the table have emerged.

Sky Italia have stated that Jose Mourinho has made Costa his number one striking target in January, and is willing to use Romelu Lukaku as a makeweight in the deal.

The powerful Belgian is currently on loan at Everton, and had a war of words with the Portuguese trainer earlier in the season.

As such, with Lukaku’s role at Chelsea in the long run undetermined, Mourinho may well be willing to send him to the Vicente Calderon, along with a transfer fee, to force Atletico’s hand.

Arsenal are also thought to be monitoring the situation closely, with Costa netting 19 goals in 21 games already this term.
