Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid, Juventus, Benfica and FC Basel stars all feature.
David Moyes was heavily criticised last summer for not being more proactive in the transfer market and ensuring that United got some of the higher profile targets they were linked with.
United remain a massive football club and that’s reflected through the number of high quality players who are linked with Old Trafford. Here are five of the best to have been linked with United moves this week.
1) Diego Costa (Atletico Madrid)
United are one of several clubs to have been linked with Brazilian forward Diego Costa this week.
His current Spanish employers are probably ruing the fact they put a £32 million release clause in his current contract, a fee that United would have no trouble in paying.
However, a move for Costa will probably depend on a striker leaving United with a current quartet of Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck.
2) Xabi Alonso (Real Madrid)
Reports this week suggested that United saw a €40 million offer for the Real Madrid star turned down last summer.
David Moyes will have to add in central midfield and the same reports suggest that the offer last summer, guarantee United’s interest should the Spaniard become available next month or next summer.
However, take this one with a pinch of salt because Alonso may not be receptive to a United transfer due to his Liverpool background.
3) Claudio Marchisio (Juventus)
The €31 million rated Italian star has been linked with United in the past but fresh reports suggest they are ready to have a serious go at trying to sign him and add quality into their midfield.
However, the same reports suggest that Arsenal are also interested in trying to sign the 27-year-old.
4) Ezequiel Garay (Benfica)
This isn’t an unfamiliar name for many United fans with Garay heavily linked with a switch to United last summer.
The Argentinian defender would be a superb addition to the United back four as the future departure or retirements of both Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic will create a huge hole which needs to be filled in the United defence.
5) Fabian Schar (FC Basel)
Manchester United are the reported competition for Arsenal to sign the talented 22-year-old defender.
The Gunners have been linked with the Swiss international for a number of months but several papers have suggested United will go after the player despite the fact his agent has revealed that the Gunners have already expressed their interest in him.
