The Manchester City striker is set to be sidelined for at least a month, which will have a knock-on effect elsewhere.
Manchester City have started the season in blistering form, and are many people’s favourites for the Premier League title this season.
However, the Etihad Stadium outfit have been rocked by the news that key attacker Sergio Aguero is set for a spell of around a month on the sidelines.
With this in mind, here are a number of things to consider while the Argentina international is on the treatment table.
Stevan Jovetic has suffered from repeated injuries since moving to City in the summer, but with the Montenegro international back in full training, an opportunity has presented itself.
The ex-Fiorentina attacker’s style of play is similar to Aguero’s, and with the South American missing the summer recruit has a great chance to play in his place.
Silva to play more centrally
If Jovetic is not given the nod, the most likely option will be to utilise a designated number ten behind Alvaro Negredo.
The probable option is David Silva. The Spain international is one of the most able playmakers in the Premier League on his day, and Aguero’s absence could well get the best out of the diminutive schemer.
Suarez the hot favourite for top goalscorer
With Aguero set to miss a handful of Premier League games, Luis Suarez must now be considered as the overwhelming favourite for the top goalscorer award this season.
Already four goals ahead of Aguero in the scoring charts, the Uruguayan could be out of sight by the time the City man returns to fitness.
Could it benefit a former City striker?
With the World Cup set to take place next summer, Argentina’s first-choice strike pairing of Aguero and Lionel Messi are both on the sidelines with injury.
As such, Alejandro Sabella must consider back-up options in case the worst was to happen to his talented duo next summer.
One of those in consideration will be Carlos Tevez, who is in excellent form for Juventus but has not played for his nation since 2011.
Weight on Negredo’s shoulders
Alvaro Negredo has shown his considerable finishing ability in his short time in England, but with top scorer Aguero not available, the Spaniard will pick up the burden.
The ex-Sevilla man has seven Premier League goals to his name this term, but will need to add to this if his side are to continue strong recent form.
