Reus, Gundogan, Mangala: Will David Moyes get his targets?

David Moyes reveals his January targets and says the club will back him.

Manchester United manager David Moyes has revealed the three star players he wants at Old Trafford to save their season. Those names being Borussia Dortmunds’ Marco Reus and Ilkay Gundogan and Porto’s Eliaquim Mangala according to the Daily Mail.

The Old Trafford manager revealed during the summer how close he was to making a major signing and that the club will back him with large sums when the right player comes along.

‘We were very close to a major, major signing in the summer. It’s easy now saying it and we didn’t do it but we were really close to a major signing and the club would have definitely showed what they’re worth.

‘They have got the money and the club will spend, there’s no question about that. We were close to a couple of really major signings. Ed (Woodward) worked really hard trying to make those signings happen but, in the end, we just didn’t quite get there’.

However, the likelihood of these signings is another matter.

Marco Reus:

The German international is a key player for Dortmund and will not be cheap. Afterall, Dortmund paid a hefty €17.1m for his services back in 2012. The former Borussia Monchengladbach man guarantees goals from midfield having notched over 20 goals since his arrival.

However, the gap between Dortmund and title rivals Bayern Munich just seems to be getting bigger and the attacking midfielder may feel a new challenge is on the horizon. A £30m offer will activate his release clause and at the age of 24 he’d be the perfect man to build a team around for the future.

Verdict: Likely

Ilkay Gundogan:

The 23-year-old midfielder is a rock in that Dortmund midfield. He has both solid defensive and attacking capabilities and would fit into arguably Man Utd’s weakest area quite comfortably. The German international was a bargain €4.5m signing from Nurnberg and his performances have warranted interest from La Liga duo Barcelona and Real Madrid

However, a back injury sustained in August has seen Gundogan miss the majority of the season and he’s not expected to return to full fitness anytime soon. Whilst the interest will continue, for the time being, he’ll be staying a Dortmund player even if they receive a £25m plus offer.

Verdict: Highly unlikely

Eliaquim Mangala:

French defender Mangala has been a crucial player for Porto since making his €6.5m move from Standard Liege in 2011. In fact, his superb displays last season helped Porto overcome Benfica to not only win the league but remain undefeated throughout the season.

However, under new coach Paulo Fonseca, Porto haven’t been at their best, recently losing their unbeaten run, crashing out of the Champions League and losing top spot to Sporting CP. Eliaquim Mangala probably feels it’s time for new surroundings and a move to the Premier League would interest him

The only stumbling block would be Porto’s insistence on a high transfer fee. They’ve sold some top names over the last few years including Falcao, Hulk and James Rodriguez for huge transfer fees and they’d want at least £30m for the defender. A steep sum, nevertheless not one that is too daunting. After all, David Moyes allegedly has the backing and the money to spend big in January,

Verdict: Possible
