Manchester United could be poised to sign Stefan Velkov.

The transfer window is getting closer, and Manchester United are making moves on a potential deal.

The Mail has reported the Red Devils have brought Stefan Velkov over for a trial, where he is training with the under-21 squad 'in the hope of impressing staff and securing a deal.'

Velkov is a 17-year-old centre-back and has five international under-21 caps for Bulgaria.

They add: "United face competition from Juventus and Inter Milan who are also keen to take a look at the 6ft 3ins teenager, Velkov is a stylish centre-back who is strong in the air."

They also write that he has been called into the Bulgarian senior squad, but he is yet to play any competitive football for them.

United if they are impressed will not want to hang around. They lost out on youth prospect goalkeeper Kjetil Haug this week, who was on trial during the Autumn, who has elected to join Manchester City instead.

The Red Devils signed youngster Guillermo Varela in the summer and regularly have their eye on the youth market.

A centre-back is likely to be a priority not only for the long-term in the senior squad, but in the under-21s with Frederic Veseli and Michele Fornasier released in the summer.

Velkov made his first team debut at 16 for Slavia Sofia back in July, and has played 21 first team games for the club since then.
