Goals from Ashley Young and Patrice Evra were enough to see Manchester United past Stoke City in the League Cup
Manchester United secured a solid away win at Stoke City to set up a difficult League Cup semi-final tie against Sunderland.
David Moyes’ men played well and goals from Ashley Young and Patrice Evra saw them over the finishing line as the Premier League champions take one step closer to another piece of silverware.
Moyes didn’t mess around naming a very strong team for the match and United coped well with some early pressure before gradually getting into the game and dominating proceedings.
Moyes can take a lot of the pressure off of himself if United make it to Wembley, with a potential Manchester derby final on the cards.
United and their boss certainly won’t take anything for granted because Sunderland have proven to be a very difficult side to beat in cup tie situations and United will need to produce their best football in order to make it through.
The celebrations after both goals show just what this tournament means to the current crop of players as it signals a chance to lay down a marker of success in the Moyes era.
It would be a great way for him to start his Old Trafford career with a trophy, regardless of the fact that the League Cup is seen as one of the lower profile competitions that one of the Premier League big boys can win.
Moyes should be pleased with the way that a number of key players stepped up and performed last night, which gives him a few selection dilemmas to go over today and tomorrow ahead of the difficult Premier League game against West Ham this weekend.
The aim now for those players who performed last night is to train well and to place pressure on the manager to make sure they’re in with a shout of starting that game against West Ham.
Here’s what United fans made of their team’s performance on Twitter.
That was a great win last night against Stoke. Welbeck, Cleverley and Evra were great. Sunderland in the semis. #MUFC— Muzza (@PhilJonesydinho) December 19, 2013
