Manchester United latest: Including League Cup win and Rooney injury

News, views and rumours relating to Manchester United in the past 24 hours.

Manchester United won 2-0 over Stoke City in the Capital One Cup quarterfinal at the Britannia Stadium on Wednesday night to progress through to the semi-finals of the competition.

Goals from Ashley Young and Patrice Evra in the second half ensured the Red Devils won the clash to progress through to the next round.

United will now face Sunderland in the semi-finals over two legs – the first of which will be played on January 7th as Manchester City face West Ham.

Manager David Moyes expressed his ‘delight’ at the win.

"Manchester United Football Club are used to winning trophies, so it's no surprise to them and it's nothing different. It's business as usual," said the Scot.

In team news, ahead of United’s clash with West Ham this Saturday at Old Trafford, striker Wayne Rooney is suffering from a groin injury suffered in the champions’ 3-0 win over Aston Villa last weekend.

However, United remain ‘hopeful’ that the England number 10 will recover in time for the games and the fixtures that follow in the festive period and into the New Year as Robin van Persie remains out injured until January.

"He has got a chance, yes," stated David Moyes of Rooney’s chances of returning to the squad for the visit of West Ham.

In transfer news, Newcastle ‘head the queue’ to sign Wilfried Zaha on loan in January according to Telegraph who report that Everton, Stoke, West Brom, Aston Villa, Swansea and Cardiff are all hopeful of agreeing a temporary deal for the England youngster.

However, United’s reported pursuit of Andres Iniesta is now over as the Spanish midfielder agreed the terms of a three-year contract extension to keep him at Barcelona until 2018.
