Midfielder Jack Wilshere has lost the appeal against his suspension which would have enabled him to play against Chelsea.
The FA have ruled his middle-finger gesture aimed at the Manchester City supporters merited no grounds for appeal as it was clearly captured on camera.
He will also miss the Boxing Day fixture against West Ham, for which defender Laurent Koscielny is tipped to be fit for.
Wilshere has been out of form of later but remains a key figure in Arsenal's future. However this ban means Arsenal can feel hard done by.
In late 2011 Luis Suarez was banned for one game, not two, by the FA for making the same gesture as Wilshere away at Fulham.
In transfer news Wolfsburg attacker Diego has been told he needs to take a 2.7m Euros annual pay cut if he wants to remain at the German club, increasing his chance of an exit on a free transfer next season - with Arsenal previously linked.
Goal.com have claimed Arsenal have a five attacker shortlist for January - one which is hugely ambitious. They report Fernando Llorente, Robert Lewandowski, Diego Costa are striking options along with Stephane El Shaarawy and versatile Ezequiel Lavezzi. Former Gunners hero Gilberto Silva has seen his Atletico Mineiro side crash to defeat in the Club World Cup. Gilberto, 37, was on the bench for the game but has been playing at centre-back recently this season.
