Suarez is master of his own destiny - in more ways than one

Luis Suarez might be persuaded to stay at Liverpool if they qualify for the Champions League - something that hinges on the striker himself.

Luis Suarez is in a unique position.

Usually, a club will strive to do their best to keep their star player, be it through winning a trophy or ensuring Champions League football.

In Suarez's case, though, only he can decide the outcome of Liverpool's season, meaning that he has more of a bearing on his own future than anyone else.

Interesting, isn't it?

Not only does Suarez have the choice of accepting or rejecting Liverpool's new contract offer - reported to be worth £130,000 a week - but he has sole control over one of the variables of the deal.

If the Reds were to make Europe's premier competition, the 26-year-old might be persuaded to stave off the advances of Real Madrid - if only for another season.

Yet, on the pitch, whether Liverpool do so or not will depend only on Suarez's goals, assists and general brilliance otherwise.

He is well and truly the master of his own destiny - in more ways than one.

The Uruguayan has been in unbelievable form lately and the Reds sit just three points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal as a result of the inspiration he has brought to his side.

Liverpool may well end up challenging for the title and what more could Suarez need to persuade him to stay at Anfield?

If his heart is truly set on a move to Madrid, though, it would be easy for the 26-year-old to step off the gas and make the decision for himself more straightforward.

But the fans love him at Liverpool, so do his team-mates and manager. So if Suarez wants to stay at Liverpool, he can make that happen all by himself, firing them into the Champions League next season.
