A round up of the key news and transfer stories about Liverpool from the past 24 hours.
Liverpool have begun talks with Luis Suarez’ agent over a new contract at the club. The Reds are naturally keen to tie down the best striker in the Premier League and talks with Pere Guardiola are under way.
Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann has issued a warning to Liverpool over a new contract for Luis Suarez. The German has suggested there is no point giving the forward a new deal unless he commits himself fully to the club.
“What must not happen is we have a situation next summer as we had last summer. He could sign a new contract now, take the £200,000 a week, the team finishes outside the top four and you have the same shenanigans,” Hamann told TalkSport.
Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho says the club sent out a strong message to their rivals, after thrashing Tottenham Hotspur 5-0 last weekend. Sakho believes the club are right in the mix to achieve their aim of Champions League football while maintaining a shot at the Premier League title.
Brendan Rodgers has hailed his predecessor Kenny Dalglish for the signing of midfielder Jordan Henderson. Henderson was one of the players who had a superb game against Tottenham and Rodgers says Dalglish deserves praise for making the big money signing.
In transfer news, Liverpool have a fight on their hands in more ways than one to try and sign Hamburg teenager Hakan Calhanoglu. Liverpool will be forced to battle against Arsenal and those trying to keep him at the German side if they want to go after him this winter or next summer.
Elsewhere, Dinamo Moscow have confirmed that Liverpool have not been in contact with them over a potential move for winger Balazs Dzsudzsak.
“There are interested teams, but at such a big club as Dinamo it's not a surprise. It's very busy during the winter and the summer transfer window but I can say we haven't received any detailed offers for the winger,” said sporting director Guram Adzojev.
In other news, Liverpool have received an injury boost of sorts ahead of their Boxing Day clash against Manchester City. City defender Pablo Zabaleta is likely to miss the game after pulling up with a hamstring problem as City progressed in the League Cup against Leicester City last night.
Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that he will promote youngsters Brad Smith (19) and Jordan Rossiter (16) to his first team squad after the pair impressed him during training.
“We’ve had Jordan Rossiter training with us. He’s an outstanding young talent. Brad Smith, a left back who I think is another outstanding young player, has been here too,” said the boss.
Reports have suggested that another youngster, Ryan Kent, has signed his first professional deal with the club. The 17-year-old is thought to have penned a deal after graduating from the club’s academy with the news breaking on Sky Sports News earlier today.
