Chelsea named a strong side for the League Cup quarter-final clash against Sunderland last night but it wasn’t enough to stop them losing out to the Black Cats 2-1 after extra time.
Things were going well for the Blues when the ball was scrambled home following a touch from Frank Lampard but Sunderland rallied well in front of a makeshift home crowd to force the tie into extra time.
The result will definitely be a blow to Jose Mourinho because the League Cup is the first piece of silverware he won in England during his first spell in charge of the West London outfit.
Although Mourinho wouldn’t admit it, the League Cup is arguably the lowest priority competition for Chelsea this season with the Premier League, the Champions League and the FA Cup traditionally ahead of the League Cup in the pecking order.
However, it will be a blow to the Stamford Bridge side and there will be some discontented players this morning because it’s another piece of silverware which has slipped away.
Chelsea will have to respond quickly because they face a massive clash against Premier League leaders Arsenal weekend and defeat in that game will put them even further behind in the title race.
It’s a massive game this weekend so it’s important Chelsea and Mourinho move on quickly.
The Blues are likely to make several changes for that game to the one which appeared against Sunderland although the core strength and experience through the spine of the team should be retained.
Credit does have to go to Sunderland because they fought back well with goals from Fabio Borini and Ki in extra-time when they could have easily rolled over and surrendered to a lot of Chelsea pressure in the second-half.
Here is what Chelsea fans made of the Sunderland result on Twitter.
Who's the first option for Chelsea in attack? Might as well not have one. Therefore attacks are uncoordinated and uncertain. #cfc— Harry (@harryjcurtis) December 18, 2013
You wanna be like Bayern who their striker always score do you think the ball just go to them? Their MDers aren't selfish like ours. #CFC— Alagbe O Nicholas (@Nichogbee) December 18, 2013

You can call me names I don't care, David Luiz is not the type of defender that we need except if he change. #CFC— Alagbe O Nicholas (@Nichogbee) December 18, 2013
