This season has certainly been one to forget for Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira. The German international dropped out of the reckoning for Real Madrid for a while, and found himself being lambasted in the Spanish press - one commentator even calling him 'a mule’.
Khedira is also said to be upset at Jose Mourinho’s sacking, as the pair got on well not to mention the departure of Mesut Ozil. The pair came through the German youth ranks together and are very close friends - so losing him to Arsenal this summer was also likely to prickle Khedira.
‘The Wardrobe’ was therefore linked with plenty of moves recently. As we enter the winter period there is always going to be conjecture and the like - on this occasion that conjecture suggested Chelsea and Manchester United interest - with Arsenal also keen due to their Ozil factor.
But when Khedira went down lame v Italy last month it was clear that Khedira would be going nowhere soon - he tore the anterior cruciate ligament which rules him out for the majority of the season.
So he is going nowhere in January … but what about in the summer.
Real Madrid have been widely reported to want £34 million to consider selling the player - but according to reports today that is also untrue.
As much as Arsenal, Chelsea and United could all do with and want Khedira in their team it seems likely that will not be happening - as he is said to be on the cusp of signing a new deal with Los Blancos.
El Confidencial report today that Real are keen to extend his contract, which currently expires in summer next year.
The report suggests:
“Sami Khedira is recovering in Germany from the injury suffered against Italy in November. Through January he will not return to Madrid. As he does, the midfielder has renewed his contract with Real Madrid. His current deal ends in 2015 and the contract extension has become a priority. He will not leave in in January and extend until 30 June 2018. Los Blancos are still unanswered for the continuity of Xabi Alonso so have secured the signature of the German.”
So it seems he is going nowhere fast.
