United's win at Villa: A springboard or another false dawn?

David Moyes

There was some optimism coming out of Manchester United after their comfortable victory against Aston Villa, but will they kick on?

Manchester United got a much needed win at Villa Park this weekend with a 3-0 win over Aston Villa, keeping up their impressive record in that fixture.

The gap for David Moyes' men to top of the table Arsenal is now down to ten points, and they have managed to put the bad spell of results that saw them pick up only two points in four games behind them.

The question everyone will be asking though is, can United can finally put their stuttering behind form them and go on a run to at least get into the Champions League places – and mount a decent defence of their Premier League crown?

Their upcoming fixtures look relatively kind with sides above them playing each other over the festive period, and one would think if they don’t take advantage over the festive period then it could be a real struggle.

So, can the win at Villa be the turning point they were looking for this season, and use it as a springboard to success? Or is it another false dawn?

They’ve have begun the spell without Robin Van Persie impressively. Danny Welbeck seems to have stepped up and their next two games are against a struggling West Ham side at Old Trafford, and newboys Hull City on Boxing Day at the KC Stadium.

This is before they welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Old Trafford, a side that has just sacked their manager, which at this stage it is unknown what frame of mind Spurs could be in going into that fixture. Then follows a home match against Swansea before they make a trip to Stamford Bridge.

12 points from the next four games could bring United back into the race at the top, and yesterday they showed some real energy against Aston Villa and looked pretty positive – a word that hasn’t often been associated with David Moyes.

Four wins from the next four games, and Villa could be looked back upon as a springboard for the rest of the season.
