Swansea chief in Italian side slip of the tongue

After drawing Napoli in the last 32 of the Europa League, Alun Cowie compliments another Italian team unintentionally.

As Swansea were in the draw for the knockout rounds for the Europa League yesterday, there was a bit of a slip of the tongue from their general manager Alun Cowie after the draw.

The Swans were paired with Napoli who dropped out of Arsenal’s Champions League group despite finishing level on points with both the Gunners and Borussia Dortmund on 12 points.

Momentarily however, Cowie’s mistakenly said Lazio instead of Napoli.

Swansea came through their group in second place behind Valencia – who they managed to beat in their opening group stage match at the Mestalla, and Cowie did say he is looking forward to the challenge of hosting the Italian side, and he did correct himself later on. It’s an exciting tie for Swansea, put the name confusion down to his own excitement.

Here’s what he said:

‘Lazio are clearly one of the toughest draws. They’ve come out of the Champions League with 12 points, that’s almost unheard of. How many teams will drop down into the Europa League with four wins from the group stages of the Champions League?

‘We’re in here to play the best and we’ve got the best. It’s an absolutely fantastic draw for us but before we go there we’ve got a great night at the Liberty to look forward to and the place will be rocking for the visit of Napoli.’
