Liverpool aiming for top four or title? Ex-player has his say

Liverpool's aim for the season appeared to be Champions League qualification, but the start they've made means they're being talked about for the title...

The debate at the moment is whether Liverpool are genuine contenders for the title or just contenders to qualify for the Champions League.

It rumbles on further with Liverpool comprehensively despatching Tottenham Hotspur on their own patch at the weekend, leaving the Reds two points behind Arsenal at the top of the table.

From a period of seasons where Liverpool’s league finishes have read 7th, 6th, 8th, 7th, to be in contention for top spot would represent an incredible amount of progress, whilst others will have looked at 4th as the target.

Ex-Liverpool striker John Aldridge has said in his Liverpool Echo column that he thinks the Reds are top four contenders rather than contenders for the title.

He said: ‘I know we’re only two points off the top but I don’t believe we are title contenders. We’ve got to be realistic.

‘I’d happily take fourth place now and I think most fans would too. I just don’t think the squad is strong enough to compete for the title.

‘We have benefited from the fact we aren’t in Europe as the manager hasn’t had to tinker too much.’

For as long as Liverpool stay within a win or two of the top of the table – and they could reach the summit at the weekend with a win over Cardiff.

‘We can’t sit back and bask in that win over Spurs,’ Aldridge said, ‘we need to focus on putting Cardiff City to the sword on Saturday.’

With Manchester City and Chelsea on the horizon, if Liverpool do beat Cardiff and are top going into those fixtures, despite many surrounding Anfield wanting to remain cautious title talk is only going to continue.
