Manchester City latest: Boss says Barca on the wane; Aguero injury opens door for Jovetic

All the latest news, views and transfer rumours from the Etihad…

It was the Champions League draw no one wanted. Or was it? Manchester City will face Barcelona in the last 16 of this season’s competition, and yet they seem rather…excited.

City midfielder Samir Nasri had already told the Telegraph that “all of Europe” would fear a tie against Manuel Pellegrini’s men after their recent victories over Arsenal and Bayern Munich, and now they are up against arguably the biggest of the lot.

City will host the La Liga champions in the first-leg, before travelling to the Nou Camp for the deciding fixture. But given their performance in the Allianz Arena last week, they will have high hopes of causing another upset.

City will be up against a man recently tipped by more fanciful media outlets to move to Manchester next summer – Lionel Messi.

But speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Pellegrini does not believe Barcelona are the same force they were during Pep Guardiola’s reign.

On the prospect of facing City, Pellegrini said, “I think they will be very concerned also. Barcelona is not the team it was two years ago.”

He then dismissed the match as something to consider in the future, with Premier League and domestic cup duties taking centre stage for now.

But that is in February,” he said. “We will worry about that later.”

City will have to do without Sergio Aguero for many of those matches, after he was ruled out for at least a month with a calf injury.

And the Daily Star reports that the Argentine’s injury could give a chance to Stevan Jovetic.

As the Blues prepare to face Leicester City in the League Cup, the summer signing could finally get a chance to stake a claim for a first-team place.
