West Brom sack Clarke - but was it the right decision?

A 1-0 defeat to Cardiff sealed Steve Clarke's fate, with West Brom just two points off safety.

And so another one has gone.

Steve Clarke is the latest managerial casualty in the Premier League.

A 1-0 defeat to Cardiff sealed the 50-year-old's fate, with West Brom plummeting to 16th in the league and just two points from safety. The Baggies have also won just seven matches this calendar year.

But were the West Brom hierarchy too quick to act for their own good?

It was only a few weeks ago that the Baggies were winning at Old Trafford - and Clarke receiving all the plaudits for it.

West Brom have won just three times in 16 league games but, with a transfer budget that cannot compare to most of their top-flight rivals, what do Baggies officials really expect?

Clarke had helped the club achieve their highest ever points tally last season and acted shrewdly in the transfer market to help the midlands club compete.

West Brom have also fallen the wrong side of Lady Luck on several occasions this term, notably in the 2-2 draw against Chelsea in November.

Whoever comes in to replace Clarke at the Hawthorns will have a tough task on their hands. And whether anyone can cope as well as the 50-year-old did in his first job in management is something that remains to be seen.
